This annual commemoration dates back to 1605 and the failed ‘Gunpowder Plot’, where a group of Catholic conspirators, led by Guy Fawkes, attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament and assassinate the Protestant King James I. The discovery of the plot on the night of the 4th/5th of November led to the tradition of lighting bonfires and fireworks to celebrate the King’s survival. Over 400 years later, it’s a date that still fills the skies of our local areas like Loughborough and Leicester with spectacular displays.
