Can You Fit Plantation Shutters on uPVC Windows?

If your home has white or anthracite uPVC windows, you are not stuck with blinds forever. The Short Answer

• The shutter sits in its own frame. That frame is fixed into the reveal or solid surround — not drilled through the sealed glass.
• Recess depth and handle clearance matter. A shallow reveal or large handles may need a different frame type; that is a survey decision.

• Cost is about size and style, not “because it is plastic.” Expect similar ranges to timber windows of the same size.

How Shutters Are Fitted to uPVC (Without Damaging the Glass)

A good install creates a secondary timber or composite shutter frame inside or against the window opening. The louvred panels hang on that frame with hinges. When you open a shutter panel, you still reach the uPVC window handle and open the sash as normal.

That kitchen install is typical of what we mean: the shutters sit in the reveal on their own frame. The glass unit is left alone.

What a careful fitter avoids:

• Screwing through the sealed unit or the thin plastic bead that holds the glass.
• Mounting brackets that stop the sash tilting or opening fully.
• Forcing full-height panels into a recess that is too shallow for the louvres to open.

If someone tells you shutters “cannot go on plastic windows,” they usually mean they do not want to survey the reveal properly — not that the job is impossible.

What We Check on a uPVC Survey

Mark (or another surveyor) measures every opening on site. On uPVC specifically, we look at:

1. Reveal depth — enough space for louvres to rotate clear of the glass.
2. Handle and hinge projection — whether an inside-recess frame still clears the furniture on the sash.
3. Square and plumb — uPVC replacements are usually true, but older brick openings still move.
4. How the window opens — side-hung casement, top-hung, tilt-and-turn, or fixed light.
5. Material recommendation per room — moisture, traffic and budget, not one product for every window.

Best Shutter Materials for Homes with uPVC

For most uPVC-fronted semis and new builds around Loughborough, Melton Mowbray and Market Harborough, faux wood on the majority of openings is the sensible default. Mix materials room by room if a bathroom or conservatory needs something tougher.

Styles That Work Well on Modern Casements

• Full-height — maximum privacy and light control on bedrooms and living rooms.
• Café-style — privacy at sofa height with daylight above; popular on street-facing fronts.
• Tier-on-tier — independent upper and lower panels when you want more flexibility than café-style.

Anthracite grey uPVC is not a barrier. White or soft-grey shutters often look sharper against dark frames than an exact colour match — bring a sample of your frame colour to the survey.

What Does It Cost?

Fitting shutters on uPVC does not carry a special “plastic window surcharge.” You pay for the shutter size, style and material.

As a 2026 planning guide for a standard casement:

• Faux wood — roughly £150–£350 fitted
• Hardwood — roughly £300–£600 fitted
• Shaped, wide or bay openings — higher, quoted per panel

Common Myths We Hear on Leicestershire Surveys

“Shutters only work on wooden sash windows.”
No. Sash windows are one use case. Most current installs in our area are on uPVC casements.

“You have to drill the window and void the warranty.”
Not with a proper recess or reveal fix. Ask the fitter to show you where the screws go before they start.

“uPVC and shutters look cheap together.”
Poor-quality panels can. A made-to-measure set with a crisp frame and consistent louvre gaps looks intentional — especially when the shutter colour is chosen against your actual frame, not from a phone screen.

“New-build recesses are too shallow.”
