Landing Window Shutters: What UK Homeowners Need to Know

A landing window has a simple job that is easy to get wrong. The stairs need daylight, and the glass is often in line with a neighbour or the street. Landing window shutters can do both — light on the stair, privacy at eye line — if the style suits the opening and the panels are measured where they actually sit.

This guide covers what we recommend on surveys across Leicester, Loughborough and Leicestershire: louvres versus solid panels, louvre size on a short or tall landing, why cords are a poor idea over a stair, and what we check before anything is ordered.

The Short Answer

  • Yes — most landing windows take made-to-measure shutters.
  • Louvres keep the stair lit while you tilt them for privacy.
  • Solid panels give a fully closed finish, and fold back when you want the glass clear.
  • Small landings usually suit 47mm or 63mm louvres. Taller stair windows can take 63mm or 76mm. See the louvre size guide.
  • Shutters have no cords, so nothing hangs over the staircase.
  • Measure on site. A landing window is often above the stairs, and a photo will miss the reveal.
  • Price a small landing like a standard window, and a tall stair window higher. Our plantation shutters cost guide has the 2026 ranges.

Why a Landing Is Different

A bedroom shutter is judged on sleep and privacy. A landing is judged on whether you can see the next step.

Typical openings we survey:

  • A tall window halfway up the stair, often overlooked by a neighbour
  • A smaller window on the upper landing, sometimes short enough that wide louvres look heavy
  • A window over the hall, where the light has to travel down the staircase
  • A reveal that is awkward to reach, above a handrail or a turn in the stair

Curtains on these windows tend to pool, catch the stair rail, or block light you actually need. A blind can work, but a long chain over a stair is the wrong place for one. Shutters sit in the reveal and leave the stair clear.

Louvres, when the stair needs light

This is the spec we use most often. Tilt the louvres for privacy without turning the stair into a dark well. Split tilt lets the lower blades close while the top stays open, which matters when a neighbour looks straight across the landing.

Oak hardwood plantation shutter with louvres open on a landing window above a timber staircase in Barwell

This Barwell landing uses Oak hardwood, 76mm louvres, silent split tilt and Bright Brass hardware, chosen to sit with the oak stair. A stained hardwood finish is the exception. Painted shutters are the usual choice. It shows the layout: louvres, not a solid door, so the stair stays bright.

Solid panels, when you want a full close

Solid panels open and close like small internal doors. Shut, they cover the glass more completely than louvres. Open, they fold back. They suit a landing where night privacy or a traditional look matters more than tilting the blades through the day. Our solid panel shutters guide covers that style on its own.

Crisp Linen solid panel shutter closed over a landing window in Wymondham

This Wymondham landing is Crisp Linen solid panels. There are no louvres to tilt. The panels close fully, and they fold clear when you want the window open.

Café-style, on a short landing window

Lower panels only, with the top glass left clear. Useful when the opening is small and a full-height set would look heavy, and you still want privacy at eye line. On a very tall stair window, café-style can look oddly low. The café-style shutters page shows where that layout earns its place.

Louvre Size on a Short or Tall Opening

A landing is one of the rooms where louvre size is easy to overdo. On a short panel, 89mm or 114mm leaves only a few blades and looks out of scale. 47mm or 63mm is the usual start on a small landing. A taller stair window has the height for 63mm or 76mm, which is what we used in Barwell.

We do not pick one size for the whole house and force it onto the landing. The louvre size guide walks through light, proportion and handle clearance.

No Cords over the Stairs

This is the practical safety point, not a slogan. Plantation shutters are worked by hand: tilt the louvres, fold the panels. There is no loop and no chain.

A manual blind on a tall landing often needs a long chain so you can reach it from the stair. That chain hangs in the one place a child climbs past every day. If that is why you are replacing a blind, read the child-safe blinds and shutters guide before you choose. Motorised blinds are the other cord-free route when you want fabric rather than shutters.

Shutters are still furniture. Panels should clear the stair rail when they fold, and children should not swing on them. We check that on survey.

Materials

Faux wood is the practical default on a landing that gets condensation, especially a north-facing stair or a window that never quite dries. It also suits uPVC replacement windows.

Stained hardwood is worth it when the landing is dry and you want the shutter to match a timber stair, as in Barwell. Painted hardwood or our usual painted ranges suit a dry landing where you want the shutter to disappear against the wall.

MDF can be acceptable in a dry hallway. It is a poor default where the glass mists up. Our wood versus faux wood guide sets out the trade-off, and finishes are on the colour swatches page.

What We Check on a Survey

  • How the light falls on the stair — so we do not specify a solid close where you need daylight.
  • Who can see in — the street, a neighbour’s landing, or a private side elevation.
  • Reveal depth and whether the panels clear the handrail when they fold.
  • Whether the window still opens for ventilation once the frame is in.
  • Louvre size against the height of the opening.
  • How we will measure it. Many landing windows sit above the stairs. Measuring them yourself from a step is how quotes go wrong. Our note on why measuring yourself can be costly explains that.

We bring samples, measure the opening, and leave a fitted quote.

Frequently AskedQuestions.

Can you fit plantation shutters on a landing window?
Yes. Most landing casements take made-to-measure shutters, including the tall narrow windows halfway up a stair and the smaller windows on an upper landing. We measure on site, because these openings are often above the stairs and the reveal is rarely a simple rectangle.
Will landing shutters make the stairs dark?
Only if you close them fully. Louvre shutters can sit tilted open so daylight still reaches the stair, while the lower blades cover a neighbour's view. Solid panel shutters give a darker close when they are shut, and fold back when you want the glass clear.
Are louvres or solid panels better on a landing?
Louvres are the better everyday choice when the stair needs light. Solid panels suit a landing where you want a fully closed, traditional finish and you are happy to fold the panels back by day. We show both on a survey.
Are shutters safer than blinds on a staircase?
Shutters have no cords or chains, so nothing hangs over the stair for a child to reach. A blind on a tall landing window often needs a long chain. If cord safety is the reason you are replacing a blind, our child-safe guide covers the options.
What louvre size suits a landing window?
A small landing window usually looks better in 47mm or 63mm louvres, because only a few wide blades fit in a short panel. A taller stair window can take 63mm or 76mm. We recommend a size for that opening, not one size for the whole house.
How much do landing window shutters cost in the UK?
A small landing casement usually sits in the standard ranges in our plantation shutters cost guide: faux wood often £150–£350 fitted for a standard window. A tall stair window costs more because of the height and the panel count. Hardwood costs more again. We quote after measuring.
Do you fit landing window shutters in Leicester and Loughborough?
Yes. Shutter Envy surveys and fits made-to-measure shutters for landings and stair windows across Leicester, Loughborough, Melton Mowbray, Market Harborough and surrounding Leicestershire villages. Book a free home visit for a fitted quote.
